Job Description

Job Summary: The staff attorney works as part of a team with the CGP staff to provide comprehensive legal and advocacy services to guardianship clients.


Job Responsibilities:

  1. Handle individual caseload in Article 81 guardianship law including handling guardianship discharges, including seeking permanent placement of a client; seeking expansion or contraction of powers; may include some Civil Court (Housing) appearances with staff and/or clients.

  2. Works with and shares responsibility of supervising Program Specialists and volunteer attorneys.

  3. Works with senior management and staff to develop case plans with respect to legal issues.

  4. Able to competently and timely provide a full range of legal service. These services include, but are not limited to:

    1. Administrative advocacy and representation at hearings before public and private agencies and authorities

    2. Litigations in state courts

    3. Drafting pleadings and other legal documents

    4. Obtaining and reviewing documents and records

    5. Legal research and writing

    6. Negotiating and settling matters

    7. Interviewing clients and providing appropriate advice

    8. Referral to other sources of legal assistance


  1. Participate in staff meetings, training seminars and community activities as appropriate.

  2. Maintains required case records, reports and statistics in a timely and complete manner.

  3. Handles special assignments and duties as assigned.

Selfhelp complies with all Federal, State and Local laws in regards to wages.Knowledge, Skills And Requirements

  • J.D. is required.

  • Must have a license to practice law in the State of New York and maintain active registration with the New York State Office of Court Administration.

  • At least two years experience in elder or administrative law, is desirable, with experience in client representation, advocacy, training, and community education regarding Medicaid and other government entitlement programs.

  • Experience and/or demonstrated commitment in community service, government benefits, and social justice issues are desirable.

  • Familiarity with government entitlement programs and advocacy is a plus.

  • Russian, Spanish, Chinese dialects or other foreign languages are a plus.

  • Must be able to travel locally to make off-site visits.
